Toronto 2018 mayoral election contributions

Contributions to mayoral candidates in the 2018 Toronto municipal election. Over $3.3 million was donated. How did each candidate fare?

Candidates: John Tory, Jennifer Keesmaat, Faith Goldy. All remaining candidates categorized as Other.

• < $500; 

• $500 < $1,000; 

• $1,000 < $1,500; 

• $1,500 < $2000; 

• $2,000 <= $2,500

• Tory does well in all categories. He is only outdone in the under $500 category by Jennifer Keesmaat.

• The highest allowable contribution was $2,500. Clearly John Tory was the preferred candidate for maximum-value contributors.  

• There were 708 $2,500 contributions and Tory took in 671 of these contributions.

• In total Tory received 715 contributions of $2,000 or more. Nearly all of these donors were enthusiastic enough to give the maximum amount of $2,500.

• Not surprisingly John Tory also has the highest average value of contributions, clearly outdoing all rival candidates.

• By a huge margin, John Tory outdid his rivals in terms of the total amount contributed.

• He took in $2,666,385 - over 5.5 times more than the candidate with the next highest contribution total.

Note on the data:

In 2018 the highest allowable contribution was $2,500. However, individual candidates could contribute more than that amount to their campaigns. These contributions are excluded from the data used for this analysis. 

This has a negligible impact. The total of these contributions was $24,564. The total amount contributed, excluding contributions over $2,500, was $3,302,333. There were only four candidates who gave over $2,500 to their campaigns.
